After some 43 years in the wine industry, I retired from corporate Australia in 2019. The Hunter Valley has been home to my wife Debra and I for over the past three decades. We live in Hunter Valley Wine Country surrounded by an 8-hectare vineyard which was first planted  in the 1960’s. Over the past twenty years we have reinvigorated the vines and have sold the fruit to local wineries with some exceptional parcels being made into wine and sold under our own label. What do you do when you retire?. I don’t play golf, I don’t have a boat, or a plane, so I decided to get back to the best job I ever had, winemaking, and make all the fruit from our home vineyard, and a super-premium parcel of Barossa Shiraz into wine and sell it into the domestic market.

Neil McGuigan Five Barrels Chardonnay

Region: Australia, Hunter Valley, New South Wales

Pristine clean fruit on the nose coupled with complex French “coffee” oak. This intensity continues onto the palate which is medium weight in structure and exhibits a touch of “gun flint” balanced by a refreshing but balanced acidity.

Neil McGuigan Five Barrels Semillon

An old Hunter Valley “White Burgundy” style of wine. This wine has a generous colour, lifted complex nose of cashew nuts, spice and tropical fruit with a palate that is rich, full, savoury and finishing with zesty acidity.

Neil McGuigan Five Barrels Shiraz Viognier

A stylish wine that exhibits very intense colour, a bouquet of dark berry fruit aromas that are complexed by intense French oak. The palate is full and rich but still retains “juicy” fruit and a firm tannin finish.

Neil McGuigan Tier One Barossa Shiraz

Beautiful colour, blackberry fruit aromas and a full rich fleshy palate with big but soft tannins. What we are trying to make with this wine is “Hunterised Barossa Shiraz”. Excellent to drink now and over the next 6-8 years.

Neil Mcguigan Tier One Chardonnay

Very complex, this wine is rich, full bodied and flavoursome. Lifted oak aromas and melony fruit are evident on the nose, with more stone fruit flavours coming through on the palate, which is balanced by gentle buttery undertones and vanillin oak.

Neil Mcguigan Tier One Semillon

This wine has a delicate vibrant green colour, lifted lime juice/lemony nose and a flavoursome palate which is pristinely clean. The wine finishes with crisp acidity and a touch of minerality. Excellent drinking now and over the next 5 years.

Medium brick red in colour with purple red hues. The nose exhibits chocolate and red berry fruit characters complemented by spicy oak and a palate that has great length, is morish and finishes with gentle but savoury tannins.
